Research Process: Developing a Search Strategy

Search Operators and Modifiers

Developing a Search Strategy

A Search Strategy is a string of terms that are used when searching for information in the journal databases, on the web, and in Library catalogues.

Take a moment to create and analyze your research question to isolate the major concepts, and then develop a search query based on those concepts.

It can be difficult to create these search strategies, but it is worth the struggle because you will find relevant and helpful information quickly!

The PDF below walks you through the process of creating a search strategy with tips and images to make the process easier and you find yourself getting stuck, get in touch with Library staff they are more than happy to help.

Research Tip

When constructing a search strategy, be careful using the NOT operator. The term is exclusive, meaning that it can potentially eliminate useful items from your search.
